Australian Kayak fishing Championships Exmouth WA Aug 2 /18

Post by yakkingbrendon » Sun Mar 11, 2018 5:05 pm

Posting this on behalf of the organisers . I will be attending as a competitor

In short there will be an Offshore Kayak Fishing Competition held based at the Exmouth Game Club Fishing over 4 days of fishing in August of 2018.

The major prize is qualifying for the World Kayak Fishing Championships (nothing to do with the Hobie Series) at the Los Buzos Resort in Panama which has a long standing Kayak fishing guide service based out of it and amazing fishing for a large range of offshore species including the amazing Rooster Fish , Sailfish ,Wahoo , yellow fin tuna amongst many more check this video out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLSLFKOklvI

The prize includes use of fully rigged Hobie Kayaks, accomadation ,meals transfers and air fare from Australia to Panama (and free beer!) First Prize for the World championships $10 000 USD !

The Australian qualifier will be based around Exmouth which has some of the best Kayak fishing in Australia with every popular tropical species you could name available and with Exmouth being on a cape you have 270 degrees of options from inside the ningaloo reef , outside the reef and inside the gulf .
The comp will not require game fishing rules to be followed so no line classes ,leader lengths etc . basically follow WA fisheries reg and comp regs

So for the East Coast crew who may want to attend Hobie Kayaks will be available to hire for the event and the organisers are keen to help assist east coast yakkers to be able to attend .

I will be driving up with my BT50 Dual cab with roof racks and a Yak trailer so I might be able to help get a kayak or two from Perth to Exmouth and back and may have a spot for a co driver .
All the official details here .

This is the excuse you guys have been looking for to finally get to Exmouth ..... DO IT!!!!

PS check out the Los Buzos page on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/losbuzospanama/ and face book https://www.facebook.com/LosBuzosPanama/

See ya up there Brendon

it's been doing the rounds on Face Book - don't know how many from the east coast will to the trip over - the cost and distance for this event will be out of reach for many
must say if I lived in WA I'd be there for sure

I'm sure it will be a great event, unfortunately the size of Australia means a lot wont make it, $1k for the flight from Sydney by the look of it and then you don't have your own yak. It would be a hell of a road trip :-)

It seems a real shame that the organisers opted to hold a "national championship" so far from the majority of the national population, to then represent Australia in a global comp.... hopefully they'll come to their senses and be a little more even-handed next time around.

There was suposed to have been another organiser setting up a qualifier on the East Coast I beleive but i dont have any other details . In short Damian Bowman in WA who runs a number of comps in WA put his hand up to get a qualifying comp going and it was not originally going to be the only one in Australia .

Qualifiers would have made the world (no pun intended) of difference Brendon. AFAIK, Exmouth is the only one.

I see this on FB this morning

"It's crunch time!

We need 25 or more entrants paid up by APRIL 31st to make sure the first national offshore kayak fishing event goes ahead.

It will take 50 entrants to cover the costs of the huge prize (flights, accommodation etc to the Panama world championships in Jan) but I'm willing to pay this out of my own pocket.

Let's all get on board early for this and be there in August at Exmouth WA. We have concessions for non WA residents.

If the event does not go ahead I will be going myself as a wildcard as I've already paid for the spot. If I can't make it I will be selling it to a competent kayaker which I hope will do Australia proud. Let's hope it doesn't come to this."

the event must be struggling to get entries atm

"So for the East Coast crew who may want to attend Hobie Kayaks will be available to hire for the event and the organisers are keen to help assist east coast yakkers to be able to attend ."

I'm looking at return flights from Sydney to Perth @ $299.

Come on boys - let's do it!
