Repairing out of warranty sounder

Post by leapyear » Wed Aug 02, 2017 4:20 pm

Lowrance. Out of warranty. No evidence of water incursion or other damage. I've checked battery and connections, all good. I've tried hard and soft reset but nothing happens...

My inadequate skills with all things electrical leave me at a loss.

What are my options?

Help!

Not booting up at all or going starting to boot and turning off?

You've probably already checked these things but just in case:
-Fuses also corrosion in fuse holder connections
-Try it on another battery too
-Check for corrosion on the pins in the head unit?
- Check for loose connection/wear in the sockets on the leads - try adding dielectric grease.
- Fault in map card - remove and try to boot it up
- Find a mate with same/similar sounder and try on their wiring if it fires up then its in your wiring, if it doesn't your head unit is stuffed.

Steve, Lowrance does cheap upgrades on their out of warranty sounders. Send them an email.

first thing i would do i find someone with the same sounder and see if it powers up on their wiring loom. If it does, you know your wiring loom is stuffed/has a problem.
If the head unit doesn't power up you know that's the problem and you're in the market for a new sounder.

If the unit powers up, i'd remove any additional wiring you've added to extend the cabling and then see if the unit will power up, it wouldnt surprise me if you've got corrosion in your cabling and this has increased the cabling conductors impedance to a point that the battery can no longer push sufficient current though to energise the sounder and other electronic devices.

Thanks all, much appreciated.
Took it into whitworths and tried to power it up with their wiring but still dead as a doornail, so I guess I'll see if lowrance can do anything for me...or new sounder time 😞
