Traveling from the states

Post by Inspectorbdub » Thu Jul 05, 2018 7:13 am

Hi all!
My wife and I are headed your way the first week of September and I’m having a hard time finding resources about fishing that time of year. We’ll be in Sydney a couple days then we’re flying to Whitsundays from the ocean road somewhere so location is pretty fixed. I’m an avid kayak fisherman on the east coast of the United States, and my wife, the best wife in the world, absolutely insists on booking a big boat charter from Sydney and then one from Whitsundays. The issue for me is that I’m not into the fishing charter thing and would be much happier renting a kayak and sorting it out from there. I’ll have my rods and I’m interested in the salt water.

My questions:
1) Are there any local guys or gals who have some good time on the water that have good websites/blogs with info or that wouldn’t mind chatting? Google from the states has noting to offer this quest for info. It’s just links to charters. I’ve already called some local tackle shops they also have charters.

2) what’s active in Sydney both in Sydney and Whitsundays?

3) any good kayak rental spots in Sydney and Whitsundays?

4) What info do y’all mind sharing with a gringo from the states?

Thanks everyone! Cheers, Brandon

I have fished around the Whitsundays with someone who hired a kayak from Salty Dog kayak hire in Shute Harbour. It wasn't the latest or greatest but the serivce was great and hassle-free, nothing dodgy like you sometimes expect from a business in a tourist location. https://www.saltydog.com.au/

He hired a plastic fishing kayak, not a glass ocean model. We strapped it onto my tinny, used it for the week, delivered it back to them, no drama!

Youll be well sorted Inspector. This forum while not populated does have a good network across the country.
Best I can tell you as a fellow gringo, Whitsundays is a hell of a long way from Sydney.

Only about 2 and a half hours by plane, plus transfers.

To clarify I can fly to Cabo in about that same time. My fishing here is worlds away from there.
